Community Engagement Coordinator

Kiona Nessenbaum, a 3rd year student at the Midwives College of Utah, is a loving wife to her highschool sweetheart Kumar, and a caring mother to their two children, Kavina and Kairo. Ever since the age of 8, Kiona has been passionate about becoming a mother and working with babies and their parents through the childbearing years. She finally dove into birth work after her own birth experience with the birth of Kavina in 2013. She was trained as a Birth Doula through the Simkin Center at Bastyr University in 2014 and then again by Big Belly Services in 2019 where she then became certified.  


Kiona identifies as Black, Native American and Mexican and was born and raised in Washington State, besides a small 3 years in California between the ages 4 and 7. She has always had a strong passion to educate and empower people during the life changing time of pregnancy, labor and birth. She is also very passionate and determined to create a positive change in her community through Midwifery Care as a Midwife of Color, one birth at a time. Kiona has been connected with The Rainier Valley Community Clinic since it began in 2015. Though Kiona is still very passionate about midwifery, the current times have caused a detour in her educational pathway towards midwifery. Because of this Kiona Is passionate about learning alongside others at The Raining Valley Community Clinic in addition to sharing her own knowledge and background that she has learned over the years while as the Community Engagement Coordinator.
